Rugby

The Old Brentwoods Rugby Club began as a nomadic, Sunday side in 1967, thanks to the vision and efforts of Phil Unwin and schoolmaster, Joe Hodgson but moved to Saturdays and a full fixture list for two teams in 1970. Originally playing on "the cow patch" and, as a result, featuring in Michael Green's "The Art of Course Rugby" as the club that lost its opposition on the way from the changing rooms to the pitch, the growth of the club was a major consideration in the Society's decision to seek a bigger ground that was to result in the purchase and development of Ashwells Road.
Today the Rugby Club is probably the most vibrant of the affiliated clubs and welcomes new members, both Old Brentwoods and others who can become members under "Rule 32", to play, watch or simply enjoy the social side of the club.
Promoted to Essex League 1 in 2007, the Club runs three regular sides (the 2nd. and 3rd. XVs playing in the Essex Merit Table).
The Club trains on Tuesdays and Thursdays, when Club Coach, Eugene O'Riordan, ensures that the evenings are both enjoyable and effective. The Club employs a physio., who is also available on training and match days.
The Club Blazer has become a well known sign of the Rugby Club being "out and about" both at home and abroad - the Club will be touring Cyprus this year - and the Club web-site is linked to that of the Society and should be accessed for up to date news on fixtures, results and the social events of the season; or contact the Secretary, Tim Faiers - timfaiers@hotmail.co.uk
